Doug Eckheart chosen as the ISEA Calendar Artist
Date 11/11/1999 12:00 AM | Topic: Arts & CultureLuther College Art professor Doug Eckheart's paintings have been chosen as the artwork in the 2000-2001 calendar for the Iowa State Education Association.
Eckheart has taught art at Luther College for 32 years. He was born in Moorhead, MN, and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia College, Moorhead, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
The second annual ISEA calendar will display 12 of Eckheart's color paintings. They are from a collection of his works titled "Seasonal Sonnets" which has toured 18 venues in Iowa from 1994-96.
"The paintings included in this calendar explore the delicate balance between nature's mysterious cycles and subtle moods. Last year Grant Wood was the chosen artist, so I feel I'm in good company," Eckheart said.
Eckheart's artwork has been exhibited in more than 50 one-person exhibits and 40 group shows. The 12 Seasonal Sonnets paintings were developed by Eckheart from 1991-94 as a group of related artworks.
Included with the calendar will be a pamphlet containing a short narrative by Eckheart providing background information on his work. Eckheart thinks it might be useful as a guiding educational tool.
"Doug uses his paintings as examples in his classes to challenge his students, which is also incredibly inspiring, " said Kimberly Wolyn ('00).
The ISEA school calendar is sponsored by the Iowan magazine and Luther College through a private donation. The calendar will display the logos of Luther College and ISEA in the Iowan.
The calendar will be mailed to over 1,000 teachers and school administrators throughout Iowa at the end of October.
Eckheart has served as the art department head at Luther, an artist-in-residence for studio workshops, a juror for competitions and a keynote speaker for art seminars and workshops. His career also includes times as a gallery director and curator and board member for numerous local and regional art organizations.
Eckheart was chosen to exhibit some work in the Des Moines Art Center's "Iowa Artists '99" exhibition, and he will exhibit his latest works at the Percival Gallery in Des Moines in the spring of 2000. The Percival Gallery and the Perfect Edge Art and Frame Gallery in Decorah represent his work.
