Ram and Laksh Kwame Wadhwani experience football at Luther
Date 9/30/1999 12:00 AM | Topic: Sports"I have never met such courageous guys!" stated Timothy Brovold ('01). "They jumped right into the team even though they had never played football in their lives."
The two Luther College football players to whom Brovold is referring are sophomores Ram and Laksh Wadhwani. The Wadhwanis came to Iowa from a tribe on the coast of Ghana in January 1999.
Ram, the older twin, decided to travel to Luther because of the overcrowding at the University in Ghana. His father, Dr. Jeswant-Mante Wadhwani, also wanted his sons to attend Luther because of the safe, friendly reputation.
After spending the past 13 years in the Ghana tropics, the brothers say they hated the cold weather. They also found it hard to be back in school after taking a break for three years.
"I love the way things are so laid back here," stated Ram ('02). "Everyone is extremely friendly and smiles a lot too."
Both men worked on campus this past summer and lived in Miller with other Luther students. To better prepare themselves for the football season, Ram and Laksh lifted weights in their free time.
Neither brother had ever played football before arriving at Luther, but they had watched the American sport on ESPN and decided it was a man's game.
"It's a macho thing, you have to be strong," Laksh said.
The twins, both biology majors, agree they have little free time between 16 academic credits, 16 hours of work study, and football.
"I am really glad to have them be a part of the team," stated Thane Holland ('01). The rest of the Luther College community agree
