Football falls short against Cornell
Football falls short against Cornell
Date 11/5/1998 12:00 AM | Topic: SportsAfter suffering a loss at the hands of Buena Vista over Fall Break, Luther hosted the Cornell Rams at Carlson Stadium, Oct. 31. This is the first year Cornell has been in the Iowa Conference for football, and the first match-up with Luther since World War II. Unfortunately for the Norse, a late field goal gave Luther their most heartbreaking loss of the season, 26-24.
For the third week in a row Luther was fired up for the game early, scoring on their first possession of the game. Joel Conway ('02) gave the Norse an early lead on a 27-yard field goal, making the score 3-0.
The Rams came storming back scoring a touchdown on their first possession of the game. The extra point was missed and the Rams had a lead of 6-3.
From there both teams struggled to move the ball. The next score would not come until midway through the second quarter. Luther added two touchdowns in the second quarter highlighted by a 13-yard touchdown reception by Tim Bovold ('01) from Keith Lesmeister ('01). The Norse took a 17-6 lead into the half.
In the second half the Norse defense bent, giving up two touchdowns in the third quarter as the Rams put together an offensive onslaught. The Norse defense gave up another touchdown in the fourth making the score 23-17 Cornell.
The Norse put together an impressive final drive highlighted by a great touchdown reception by Thane Holland ('01) from Lesmeister. Luther took the lead with less than two minutes remaining, 24-23, and it looked as if Luther had won a thriller.
Unfortunately, Cornell orchestrated a masterful final drive of their own scoring on a 33-yard goal, taking the lead back 26-24. Lesmeister did what he could to bring the Norse back in the final 30 seconds, but the effort went for naught. The Norse fell to 3-5 in the season.
Nov. 7 Luther travels south to Loras to take on the Duhawks. Kickoff will be at 1:00 pm.
