Paradise Cove Anguilla

M. Timothy O'Keefe Tiny Anguilla may have the Caribbean's most remarkable collection of exotic hotels. Cap Juluca, Sonesta Beach Resort, Covecastles and the Malliouhana are among the most exclusive resorts in the region, miniature fantasylands that have been made to look like they were imported from Las Vegas, Europe or the Middle East. The collection of onion domes, turrets and red-tiled roofs on this tiny island will almost make you believe you're anywhere in the world but the Caribbean. Paradise Cove, a 14-unit apartment hotel, looks like it belongs here. Not only is Paradise Cove unpretentious, it's an incredible bargain, especially for those on a family vacation.
Football Betting Spread A spacious two-bedroom unit for four costs less than US$400 a night in high season; each additional person is just US$50 nightly. Similar rooms elsewhere on Anguilla typically cost two to three times as much in winter, and you won't always get a full kitchen, air conditioning or a TV, which are standard at Paradise Cove. In summer, the nightly rate for Paradise Cove's two-bedroom units plummets to under US$250. (Single bedroom apartments average about US$100 less than the two-bedroom units throughout the year.)
Paradise Cove, which will probably remind you of small apartment or condo developments in the States, includes a surprising number of amenities for its rates. The hotel encircles an Olympic-size swimming pool, two Jacuzzis and a kiddie pool. There's also a children's playground, barbecue area and a croquet court. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available at no charge. The rooms include a washer/dryer and a large refrigerator. There is a catch, and for some people it could be a major one: Paradise Cove is not located on a beach, only near one. Well, actually near two beaches. Cove Bay is 500 yards away, Rendezvous Bay West, 300 yards; not very far for adults but probably too much of a walk for very young children. The solution? The same as at home: Pack up the car and drive to the nearest sand or to any of Anguilla's other fabulous beaches, such as Shoal Bay, one of the Caribbean's best. A rental car is a good idea for reasons other than beachcombing: general island sightseeing, eating, shopping and visiting the night spots. Each hotel room contains a fully equipped kitchen with microwave, but since there are those who prefer not to cook while on vacation, the hotel can arrange for a private cook, or you can sample from menus at the island's many fine restaurants. The hotel's Garden Terrace Cafi is open only for breakfast and lunch. The breakfast menu is quite complete while lunches are confined to a few salads and sandwiches. Grocery stores are a distance from the hotel, so visitors should stock up on their way from the airport, or ask the hotel to provide some basics prior to arrival. Paradise Cove has six one-bedroom units in a single building and eight two-bedroom units housed in two buildings. A three-night deposit is required to secure a reservation; credit cards are accepted, which is not necessarily standard in all hotels on Anguilla. Cancellations will be refunded (with a US$50 cancellation fee) if received 60 days ahead of time for reservations during the middle of December to the end of March; a 30-day notice is required for the rest of the year. A 10-percent service charge and 8-percent government tax are added to the basic room rate. Packages that include a rental car are also available.
