Financial Spread Trading Midway Games has decided to pass upon the NFL License for future NFL Blitz titles, in light of the recently announced EA/NFL agreement.
Still, the publisher plans to continue long-run football series without the NFL-featured teams and players. Even with this new approach, Midway has hired the writer of ESPN's Playmakers. The company hopes to draw fans of the show, as the project's tentative title remains Blitz: Playmakers.
Recently, Midway had been under pressure by the NFL for its over-the-top violence in the Blitz series - the very reason why a deal wasn't made to expand its longevity. Similarly, the NFL has already spoken out negatively about Playmakers, which poses a favorable situation for Midway. Apparently, the game will also include everything the show did, including drug use and various off-the-field antics.
In an interview earlier this year with Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal, an NFL spokesperson confirmed: "Midway has been quietly dropped in a 'mutual decision' as an NFL video game licensee after years of controversy over the level of violence in its NFL Blitz game.
