Football caps off winning season
Football caps off winning season
Date 11/20/2003 6:00 AM | Topic: SportsOn Saturday, the Norse football team accomplished something that has not taken place at Luther since 1992. The Norse posted a winning season in the record books.
The Norse rolled up 452 yards in total offense while defeating the Cornell College Rams in Mt. Vernon, 35-14.
The win gave the Norse an overall record of 6-4, 4-4 in the Iowa Conference. The Norse posted this same record 11 years ago. The loss dropped Cornell's overall record to 4-6, 2-6 in the Iowa Conference.
Offensively, running back Mike Jefferson ('04) had a huge afternoon, capping off an outstanding career, with a career high 220 yards on 30 carries. He reached the end zone twice, including a career long 83-yard scamper at the end of the first quarter. Jefferson finished the year with 989 yards, 11 shy of the 1,000-yard mark. He completed his career with 2,899 yards, which ranks fifth on Luther's all-time rushing list.
Adam Davis ('04) tallied 63 yards on 19 carries, and also reached the end zone twice. He finished the 2003 season with 673 yards, his best effort in a Norse uniform.
Quarterbacks Jamie Daubendiek ('06) and Nate Rolland ('06) were a combined 10 of 17 for 131 yards. Brad Paulsrud ('05) caught four passes for 40 yards and one touchdown. Adam Anderson ('04) caught three passes for 43 yards.
The Norse held Cornell to just 271 yards in total offense. The defensive unit forced four Cornell turnovers and sacked Rams quarterback Chris Lovely four times. Zach Wigle ('04) led this balanced attack with 10 tackles. Tyler Sherden ('07) was next with nine. Jason Grimm ('04), Hans Gustaf ('06) and John Jaeger ('05) were all credited with seven. Scott Romens ('05) was credited with one sack. Romens completed the season with a team high 10 sacks. Jaeger led the team in tackles with 111.
Luther also had five all conference performers on this year's team. Seniors Mike Jefferson and Dan Elliot were the Norse's two offensive representatives. On defense, Romens, Jaeger, and Sam Mcdonald ('06) rounded out the selections for the Norse.
